Mirpur Police Nab 24 in Special Crime Drive

Police have arrested 24 individuals, including two children in conflict with the law, during a special operation conducted in crime-prone areas under Dhaka’s Mirpur Model Police Station as part of an ongoing drive to curb criminal activities in the capital.

The operation was carried out on Saturday by officers of Mirpur Model Police Station under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). The information was confirmed by DMP Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Media and Public Relations) Niaz Mehedi.

According to police, the operation targeted several locations within the Mirpur Model Police Station jurisdiction that are considered vulnerable to criminal activities. The drive was aimed at apprehending individuals allegedly involved in various offences, including those wanted in connection with pending criminal cases.

Among those arrested were Sohag Hossain, 19; Mizan, 20; Jewel, 22; Jahidul Islam, also known as Polu Mia, 60; Rajan, 25; Nirab, 28; Russell, 28; Nur Alam, 32; A. Rahim, 42; Asaduzzaman Hejias, 52; Abdul Hai, 49; Sagar, 18; Rabiul, 18; Ramzan, 18; Yasin, 18; Mahmudul Hasan Antor, 26; Genius Sarkar, 27; Hamim, 22; Nahid, 22; Habib, 19; Haji Md Zahirul Islam, 52; Anwar Hossain, 34; and two children whose identities have been withheld in accordance with legal provisions relating to children in conflict with the law.

Police said the detainees include suspects linked to regular criminal cases as well as individuals allegedly involved in a range of offences. However, authorities did not disclose the specific allegations or charges against each of those arrested.

All the suspects have been produced before the appropriate court for further legal proceedings.

Special operations of this nature are regularly carried out by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police in an effort to maintain law and order, execute outstanding warrants and apprehend individuals suspected of involvement in criminal activities. Such drives are typically based on intelligence gathered by police and are concentrated in areas where crime rates are comparatively higher.

Although police did not specify the offences involved in the latest operation, similar drives in the capital have previously targeted suspects linked to theft, robbery, narcotics-related offences, extortion and other crimes. The authorities often conduct these operations to strengthen public security and discourage organised criminal activities.

Officials said the latest crackdown forms part of the DMP’s broader strategy to improve public safety through intelligence-led policing and increased patrols in densely populated neighbourhoods. Investigations into the cases are continuing, and police indicated that further legal action will be taken based on the outcome of those inquiries.

The inclusion of two children among those detained means their cases will be handled under Bangladesh’s juvenile justice system, which requires separate legal procedures and safeguards for minors. For this reason, their identities have not been disclosed.

Police have encouraged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing information about criminal activities in their neighbourhoods. Officials believe that community participation, alongside regular enforcement operations, plays an important role in preventing crime and maintaining public order.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has not announced any immediate follow-up operations in Mirpur. However, officials indicated that similar special drives will continue across different parts of the capital as part of routine efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of residents.
