-Gunmen Slaughter Dozens in Horrific Midnight Raid on Rural Nigerian Village

Dozens of villagers, including young children, have been killed following a brutal midnight assault by heavily armed criminal gangs on a remote settlement in Nigeria’s north-western Kaduna State. The attackers stormed the quiet agricultural community under the cover of darkness, opening fire indiscriminately on sleeping families and torching homes before fleeing into the surrounding wilderness.

The atrocity took place in Naridon, a village situated within the Kauru local government area. According to Dogon Rana, secretary to the village chief, the assailants descended on the settlement with automatic rifles, setting fire to residential compounds as panicked villagers tried to escape the flames. At least thirty bodies have been recovered from the ash and debris, with eight children among the dead. Four other villagers suffered life-threatening injuries during the rampage and remain in critical care.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of horrific violence as the raid unfolded. Ishaya Dawa, a local youth leader, reported that several victims were executed at close range, while others were killed with bladed weapons. The fatalities span multiple generations, encompassing women, infants, and elderly residents. Surviving villagers spent the morning hours gathering the deceased from ruined homesteads and transporting them to a regional mortuary. Police units and military detachments arrived at the scene several hours after the gunmen had retreated.

Speaking on behalf of the Kaduna State Police Command, spokesman Mansur Hassan confirmed that law enforcement agencies have initiated an investigation into the killings. He added that security forces are working to secure the surrounding rural corridors and that further updates will be published as official assessments progress. No militant group or criminal syndicate has formally claimed responsibility for the massacre.

North-western and central Nigeria have faced escalating security threats from armed bandit networks operating out of dense, unpoliced forest reserves. Unlike the north-eastern zone, which is dominated by ideological insurgencies such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), the violence in Kaduna is primarily driven by organized criminal syndicates. These groups regularly target unprotected farming communities to loot livestock, destroy crops, and execute mass abductions for ransom.

The relentless pressure from rural banditry has plunged wide stretches of Kaduna State into a deep humanitarian crisis. Thousands of agrarian families have been displaced, leaving vast areas of fertile farmland uncultivated and worsening regional food shortages. Despite repeated offensive operations and aerial strikes by Nigerian security forces, these mobile criminal networks continue to exploit regional security vacuums, leaving isolated rural communities exposed to catastrophic attacks.
