Record-Breaking Tk 11 Million for Naim as BPL Auction Blends Drama

The Bangladesh Premier League’s latest auction showcased an intriguing blend of drama at the top and restraint throughout the rest of the field. Chattogram Royals sparked widespread reaction when they secured opener Mohammad Naim for a staggering Tk 11 million—the highest bid of the event and a price that instantly made him the most talked-about player of the season.

Other franchises, however, were noticeably conservative. Rangpur Riders, despite being the biggest overall spenders at Tk 41.6 million, directed their funds towards strengthening their top order with Towhid Hridoy (Tk 9.2 million) and Liton Das (Tk 7 million). Their purchases reflect a strategy built on reliability and experience.

Rajshahi Warriors, collecting 13 players for Tk 38.1 million, built the largest squad numerically, prioritising options across departments rather than splurging on a few stars. Noakhali Express, investing just Tk 26.3 million, built the cheapest squad but one filled with promising talents.

Among overseas players, interest remained surprisingly subdued. Teams were authorised to spend up to USD 350,000 but rarely came close. Dhaka Capitals were the only side to make meaningful overseas investments—USD 75,000 for three players. Meanwhile, the likes of Indian veteran Piyush Chawla went unsold.

Three Sri Lankan cricketers—Niroshan Dickwella, Angelo Mathews, and Dasun Shanaka—were the only notable overseas names picked up at this stage.

The auction now moves into its next phase, with a separate session dedicated exclusively to international players. Over 250 names are listed, and with each team required to sign at least two foreign cricketers, the second round promises far more intensity and competition.
