Tim David Faces IPL Suspension

Tim David has been suspended for the opening match of the next Indian Premier League season following a breach of the competition’s code of conduct during the final of the 2026 edition of the tournament. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter has also been fined 50 per cent of his match fee and has received two additional demerit points.

The incident occurred during the final of the Indian Premier League 2026 season between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans. In the tenth over of the first innings, Tim David reacted to an on-field decision involving on-field umpire Nitin Menon. During this moment, he threw an ice pack towards the umpire, an act which was later reviewed under the league’s disciplinary framework.

Following the review, David was found guilty of a Level 1 offence under the IPL Code of Conduct. Under Article 2.9 of the code, it is considered a punishable breach for any player or team official to throw a cricket ball or any piece of equipment, including items such as water bottles or similar objects, in an inappropriate or dangerous manner towards an umpire, match referee, player, or any other person involved in the match.

This incident was recorded as David’s third Level 1 offence in the ongoing IPL season. Earlier in the season, he had already accumulated one demerit point in Match 20 and two demerit points in Match 54. With the two additional demerit points from the final, his total tally reached five demerit points.

According to the IPL disciplinary regulations, reaching five demerit points results in an automatic one-match suspension. As a consequence, David will miss the first match of the next IPL season for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, or, if he represents a different franchise in IPL 2027, he will serve the suspension in that team’s opening fixture.
