Barcelona’ go up against Messi in the preseason

Fresh off a remarkable season, Inter Miami are already turning their attention to the 2026 campaign, unveiling plans for a comprehensive pre-season tour across South America. The club, led by Lionel Messi, aims to sharpen its squad ahead of the upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) season with a series of high-profile friendly matches in Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador.

For the second consecutive year, Inter Miami will commence their pre-season in Peru. The opening fixture is set for 24 January at Lima’s Alejandro Villanueva Stadium, where they will face Alianza Lima, one of Peru’s most decorated clubs with 25 top-flight league titles. This encounter is expected to draw significant crowds, reflecting both the growing popularity of MLS stars in South America and the enduring appeal of Messi on the continent.

The tour will then move to Colombia, where Inter Miami will clash with two-time Copa Libertadores champions Atlético Nacional on 31 January. Atlético Nacional, boasting 18 domestic league titles, feature experienced players such as former MLS star Dairon Asprilla and long-time Colombian international goalkeeper David Ospina.

The South American tour will conclude in Ecuador, where Messi and Luis Suárez will face Barcelona S.C., the historic Guayaquil-based club, at Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha. The match promises a thrilling contest, as both teams carry the Barcelona name and rich footballing traditions.

Inter Miami have yet to announce their full pre-season squad, but anticipation is high for each fixture, with organisers expecting packed stadiums and enthusiastic support. Additional pre-season matches may also be scheduled as the club finalises its preparations.

Following the tour, Inter Miami will begin their competitive MLS season on 21 February against LAFC at the Los Angeles Coliseum, featuring Son Heung-min in what promises to be an electrifying season opener.

Looking further ahead, 4 April will mark a landmark day for the club, as Inter Miami are set to host either Nashville SC or Atlético Ottawa in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The fixture could be their final match at Fort Lauderdale’s Chase Stadium before officially inaugurating their new home, Miami Freedom Park, with a match against Austin FC.
