Woman Arrested in Tongi with Eight Kilograms of Cannabis

Police have arrested a 36-year-old woman with eight kilograms of cannabis in Tongi, Gazipur, in an early-morning anti-drug operation.

The woman, identified as Nargis Akter, was arrested in the Amtali Keranirtek area under Tongi East Police Station in the early hours of Sunday, 26 July. Police said the operation was conducted in a settlement known locally as an area where drug-related activities are prevalent.

According to police, Nargis Akter is a resident of the Amtali Keranirtek drug-prone settlement and the daughter of Alal Uddin. Investigators allege that she was involved in the illegal drug trade in the area.

Police sources said the raid was carried out following a tip-off about suspected drug-related activities. During the operation, officers detained Nargis Akter and allegedly recovered eight kilograms of cannabis from her possession. She was subsequently arrested and taken to the police station for further legal proceedings.

The seized cannabis was taken into police custody under the provisions of the relevant narcotics control law. A case has been filed against the arrested woman under the applicable legislation, police said. Following the filing of the case, she was produced before a court.

Sub-Inspector Tuhin of Tongi East Police Station confirmed the arrest. He said officers acted on confidential information and arrested Nargis Akter after recovering the eight kilograms of cannabis. The accused was later sent to court as part of the legal process.

The arrest comes amid continued efforts by law enforcement agencies to curb the circulation and sale of illegal drugs in Tongi. The area, which includes a major industrial zone and densely populated settlements, has long remained a focus of law enforcement activity. Police regularly conduct raids based on intelligence reports to identify suspected drug dealers and disrupt supply networks.

Authorities have repeatedly stressed that tackling the drug trade requires more than individual arrests, as illegal substances can move through wider networks involving suppliers, distributors and local sellers. Investigations following arrests are therefore often aimed at identifying the source of the drugs and determining whether other people are connected to the alleged operation.

In this case, police have not disclosed how Nargis Akter allegedly obtained the cannabis or whether she was working alone. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the seized drugs and look into their possible source as part of the ongoing case.

The arrest and seizure of a substantial quantity of cannabis are likely to form a key part of the investigation. Police have indicated that further information about the alleged supply chain and any other individuals involved may emerge as the case progresses.

The accused has been sent to court following her arrest, while the investigation into the alleged drug-related activities continues.
