Drug Addict Jailed for Assaulting Father and Son

A chilling case of domestic violence fuelled by substance abuse has culminated in a custodial sentence in Bogra’s Dhunat Upazila. A mobile court has sentenced 23-year-old Raju Mia to nine months of simple imprisonment following repeated attempts to assault his elderly father and infant son in a desperate pursuit of money to fund his drug habit.

A Pattern of Domestic Terror

Raju Mia, a resident of Bashpata village in the Gopalnagar Union, had reportedly transformed his family home into a place of fear. According to local sources and testimony from his father, Belal Hossain, Raju’s addiction to Yaba (a potent methamphetamine stimulant) led to frequent outbursts of extreme violence.

When his demands for money were refused, Raju would systematically vandalise the household furniture and physically assault his father. Most disturbingly, the allegations included repeated threats and attempts on the life of his own infant son. The situation became so untenable that Raju’s wife fled to her paternal home six months ago, though she was forced to leave their child behind in the care of the grandfather.

The Decisive Intervention

Driven to despair by his son’s relentless abuse, Belal Hossain filed a formal written complaint with the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and various law enforcement agencies. Acting on this intelligence, a mobile court led by the Assistant Commissioner (Land), Khairuzzaman, conducted a targeted raid on Monday afternoon.

The authorities caught Raju Mia red-handed while he was consuming narcotics at his residence. Given the severity of the domestic abuse and the presence of illegal substances, the magistrate exercised summary powers to deliver an immediate verdict.
