Mob Violence in Raipur Incident

Tension has spread across a locality in southern Bangladesh following allegations that a local political figure was assaulted by an agitated crowd over controversial remarks attributed to him on social and political personalities.

The incident is reported to have occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Saturday at Basabari Bazar in Sonapur Union, under Raipur Upazila, Lakshmipur, Bangladesh. According to local accounts, Anwar Hossain (38), a local leader associated with the National Citizen Party, entered the market area where he was allegedly confronted by a group of enraged residents. The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in him being physically assaulted before being handed over to Raipur Police Station in an injured condition.

Local sources claim that resentment had been building against Anwar Hossain for some time due to his repeated posts on social media, which were described as provocative and critical of various political figures. These allegations include making controversial remarks directed at senior political leaders, including opposition figure Tarique Rahman, as well as government ministers such as Salman F. Rahman and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee. Residents allege that such statements contributed to growing hostility in the area, particularly in the aftermath of recent political shifts.

Following the incident, Anwar Hossain alleged that he was attacked by individuals linked to a local political faction, although these claims have not been independently verified. He has demanded justice and a proper investigation into the assault.

Police responded promptly after being informed of the disturbance. Officers rescued the injured individual from the scene and transferred him to police custody for protection and further inquiry. Authorities have confirmed that he remains under police supervision while investigations continue.

On Sunday afternoon, a formal complaint was filed at Raipur Police Station by a complainant named Ruhul Amin. The case reportedly includes Anwar Hossain and three others as accused persons. The complaint also seeks legal action under the Information and Communication Technology Act, citing the alleged use of social media for incitement and defamatory content.

Law enforcement officials have stated that the matter is currently under active investigation, and no final conclusions have yet been drawn regarding responsibility or motive.
