Severe Food Safety Failure Triggers Fury in Mymensingh Primary School

FULPUR, MYMENSINGH — Parents and community members in Mymensingh’s Phulpur sub-district have expressed intense anger following a grave breakdown in state food safety oversight, after a supply contractor delivered spoiled, foul-smelling eggs intended for young pupils under a national nutritional welfare initiative.

The alarming breach took place on Sunday at Guptergaon Government Primary School. The situation unfolded shortly after morning classes concluded, as teaching staff began serving boiled eggs to first-grade children as part of their mandated dietary distribution. As soon as the children started removing the eggshells, a pungent, nauseating odour filled the learning spaces. Educators discovered that the eggs were deeply discoloured, blackened, and solidified, while several emitted decomposed, watery fluid. Recognising the immediate danger of food poisoning, school personnel acted swiftly to stop the children from consuming any of the items.

“When the first-grade pupils began peeling their eggs, an intolerable stench spread throughout the entire room,” said Ashikur Rahman, an assistant teacher who also serves as the school’s food manager. “The contents were blackened, hard, and leaking foul liquid. They were entirely unfit for consumption, forcing the children to discard them immediately.”

Rahman further revealed that Sunday’s delivery was not an isolated error. School administrators noted that this instance represents the third time the designated supplier has dispatched decayed eggs to this specific institution, exposing systemic failures in vendor monitoring, quality assurance, and distribution management.

Providing further details regarding the consignment, Nurul Haq, the acting headmaster of Guptergaon Government Primary School, confirmed that the contractor’s dispatch team delivered 218 contaminated eggs to the campus on Sunday morning. “After we lodged an immediate objection and officially alerted the supplier about the rotten batch, contractor representatives returned to the school at approximately 2:00 PM to retrieve and remove the spoiled items,” Haq noted.

Institutional Goals and Systemic Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

The state-sponsored school feeding programme was established to address endemic childhood malnutrition, elevate daily attendance rates, and enhance classroom concentration among pupils residing in impoverished rural zones. To meet essential dietary needs, the prescribed menu routinely includes boiled eggs, fresh bread buns, packaged milk, fortified biscuits, and seasonal fruits. For many children in marginalized regions, these daily meals represent a crucial source of their necessary protein and micronutrient requirements.

Nevertheless, chronic administrative oversight failures and inadequate inspection protocols at the local level continue to jeopardize student wellbeing. Distressed parents and local leaders are now calling for a comprehensive governmental investigation into the supplier assigned to the Phulpur sector. Community advocates demand stringent regulatory action, including vendor debarment and punitive measures, to ensure commercial entities do not put child health at risk within publicly funded welfare schemes.
