Woman’s Body Recovered in Ukhiya Camp

Police have recovered the body of a woman from a pond within a Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. The incident occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday in the Tajnimar Khola refugee camp (extended Camp-20) within the upazila.

The deceased has been identified as Marjan Begum (33). She was the daughter of Nur Mohammad, a resident of Balukhali refugee camp (Camp-19). According to family details, she had been married for around ten years to a Rohingya man named Hashem Ullah. She was reported missing since Wednesday evening.

Police and local Rohingya leaders stated that at approximately 8:15 a.m., several residents observed the body of a woman wearing a burqa floating in a pond located between blocks S-4 and B-7 of Camp-20. The matter was immediately reported to the authorities.

Following the alert, a patrol team from the Armed Police Battalion (APBn), responsible for camp security at the Walapalong police outpost, arrived at the scene. With the assistance of Rohingya women, the body was subsequently recovered from the water.

Camp Commander and Assistant Superintendent of Police Abu Hanif confirmed that the deceased was a resident of the refugee settlement. He stated that the circumstances under which the body ended up in the pond are under investigation.

Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police Station, Md Mujibur Rahman, also confirmed that the exact cause of death has not yet been determined. He added that police are working to establish the facts surrounding the incident. Following initial procedures, the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination in the afternoon.

Authorities have not yet issued any conclusion regarding the cause or manner of death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
