A video showing a police officer allegedly receiving and counting cash inside his office has gone viral on social media, prompting swift administrative action in Rajshahi’s Bagmara upazila. The officer, Inspector (Investigation) Kamalesh Das of Bagmara Police Station, has been withdrawn from his post and attached to the Rajshahi Police Lines pending an inquiry.
The 52-second clip, which began circulating on Sunday night, appears to show the officer seated in his official room receiving money from an unidentified individual. The footage then shows him placing the cash under his desk, retrieving it shortly afterwards, and rapidly counting what appears to be predominantly high-denomination notes before placing them into his wallet. During the interaction, he is also seen smiling and conversing with the person on the other side of the desk. A red ledger book is visible on the table, which he briefly gestures towards during the exchange.
The identity of the person providing the money remains unknown, and no audio clarity is available in the video. As a result, the context of the conversation cannot be independently verified from the footage alone. The clip was first shared by a Facebook page reportedly run by an individual named “Kazim Babu,” after which it spread widely, drawing strong reactions and criticism from online users.
Inspector Das had been serving in Bagmara as Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) for approximately three months prior to the incident coming to light. When contacted for comment, he told reporters that he was unsure when or how the video had been recorded, and suggested that payments related to ration or other administrative matters are sometimes involved, though he did not provide further clarification.
Following public attention and internal concern, senior police officials took immediate administrative action. The Rajshahi District Police spokesperson confirmed that the officer had been removed from his station duties and attached to the district police lines, adding that a formal investigation has been initiated and further measures will depend on its findings.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether a formal complaint has been lodged or whether any disciplinary or criminal proceedings will follow. The incident has nevertheless intensified scrutiny over financial practices within police stations and the use of covert recordings shared on social media.
