The Law Minister has stated that the prosecution will seek the highest possible punishment in the ongoing Pallabi child murder case, expressing confidence that the available evidence is sufficient to secure a maximum sentence against the accused.
Speaking on Sunday morning at a football and financial assistance cheque distribution ceremony held at the auditorium of Shailkupa Upazila Parishad, the Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Md Asaduzzaman, made the remarks while addressing the gathering. The event was organised by the Jhenaidah District Council.
He said that the government’s legal team is firmly pursuing the case and believes that the evidence collected will ensure the severest penalty under the law. “Based on the information and evidence in our possession, we expect that the maximum punishment for the accused will be ensured. That is our expectation,” he noted.
Beyond the courtroom matter, the minister also referred to ongoing constitutional reform discussions. He said that five members have been requested from the opposition party to join the constitutional amendment committee. According to him, the opposition has been informed and has promised to respond later. “We are currently awaiting their decision,” he added.
Outlining several government welfare initiatives, Md Asaduzzaman said the administration plans to introduce family cards for approximately four crore households across the country. He described the programme as part of a broader commitment to social protection and equitable resource distribution. He further noted that farmer cards have already been introduced in several regions and will gradually be expanded nationwide.
In addition, the minister mentioned plans to provide government stipends for religious leaders, including imams of mosques and priests of temples, as part of an inclusive welfare strategy aimed at supporting community-level service providers.
The programme was presided over by Md A M Majid, Administrator of the District Council. Other speakers included Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Noman Hossain and Shailkupa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mahfuzur Rahman. Local political figures and law enforcement officials were also present, including Senior Joint General Secretary of the district BNP Abdul Majid Biswas, Upazila BNP General Secretary Humayun Babar, and Officer-in-Charge of Shailkupa Police Station Humayun Kabir Molla, among others.
