Naogaon University Begins Academic Journey

After years of anticipation, Naogaon University has officially launched its academic activities through a colourful inauguration ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of higher education in Bangladesh’s north-western region.

The formal inauguration took place at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the university’s temporary campus in the Borunkandi Mor area of Naogaon town. The event was inaugurated by Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon, who unveiled the university’s name plaque, symbolically commencing its academic operations.

Following the inauguration, the minister toured several facilities on the campus, including classrooms, the university’s modern library and its computer laboratory. During the visit, he reviewed the institution’s initial academic infrastructure and observed the arrangements made to support teaching and learning for the first batch of students.

The ceremony was attended by a number of senior government officials, education policymakers and local representatives. Among those present were State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam; Education Secretary Abdul Khaleque; Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed; UGC Member Professor Dr Abdullah Al Mamun; Director of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, Professor Dr Khan Moinuddin Al Mahmud Sohel; and the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr Mohammad Hasanat Ali.

Members of Parliament representing Naogaon’s six parliamentary constituencies, along with the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, senior administrative officials, academics, invited guests and local dignitaries, also attended the inaugural programme.

Later, at around 12:15 p.m., the Education Minister joined a reception ceremony for newly admitted students and a civic gathering held at the Naogaon Sadar Upazila Parishad Auditorium. The event welcomed the university’s first cohort of students and brought together education stakeholders, local leaders and members of the community to celebrate the institution’s official academic launch.

The commencement of academic activities at Naogaon University is expected to widen access to higher education for students from Naogaon and neighbouring districts. With academic programmes now beginning from the temporary campus, many students will have the opportunity to pursue university education closer to home, reducing the need to relocate to distant cities.

The establishment of the university also represents an important step in strengthening regional higher education capacity. As academic activities expand over time, the institution is expected to develop its permanent infrastructure and enhance facilities for teaching, learning and research in line with national higher education objectives.
