A privately hired passenger launch unexpectedly sank while moored at a river jetty in the Barisal area, triggering concern among local river port users. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon (1 April) at the Chormain Ghat, although fortunately no casualties or injuries were reported.
According to eyewitness accounts and local sources, the vessel named Manik-4 had departed from Munshiganj late on Tuesday night, operating as a reserved passenger launch. It reached Chormain Ghat early Wednesday morning and, after completing passenger disembarkation, was left anchored at the jetty as per routine procedure.
Initially, river conditions appeared stable. However, as the day progressed, the ebb tide began to significantly reduce water levels in the area. This sudden drop in water depth caused the stern of the launch to settle unevenly onto the riverbed. Over time, the imbalance intensified, leading the vessel to tilt progressively before ultimately capsizing and sinking.
Local residents and port workers suggested that the mooring arrangement may not have been sufficiently secured to withstand the rapid tidal variation. Combined with the sharp fall in water level, this likely contributed to the vessel losing stability.
At the time of the incident, the launch was reportedly empty of passengers, with only residual equipment and personal belongings on board. While there were no human casualties, several items associated with a religious gathering, along with personal effects, are believed to have been damaged or lost due to water exposure.
Officials linked to the Chormain religious gathering media coordination team confirmed that the vessel had completed its transport duties before being left at the jetty. A spokesperson noted that the launch sank due to the sudden tidal recession and resulting imbalance, reiterating that no injuries occurred.
Local observers have stressed that such incidents highlight the vulnerability of anchored vessels during tidal fluctuations. They argue that stronger mooring practices and closer monitoring of water levels are essential, particularly for larger vessels stationed overnight or for extended periods.

River transport authorities and local stakeholders have noted that risks increase significantly during seasonal tidal shifts. They have called for improved safety protocols, including reinforced anchoring systems, continuous monitoring of river depth changes, and better preparedness among vessel operators. Without such measures, even routine mooring can quickly escalate into serious maritime accidents.
