Roots of the Conflict
The violence is reportedly the latest chapter in a long-standing rivalry between two local factions vying for dominance in the region. One group is led by Israil Sheikh, while the opposing faction is headed by Khairul Mollah.
The immediate catalyst for the violence dates back to Saturday, the day of Eid-ul-Adha. Members of the Israil Sheikh faction slaughtered a cow for the traditional sacrifice. However, tensions flared when a member of the Khairul Mollah group was allegedly denied a portion of the meat. What began as a heated verbal altercation over this perceived slight simmered for 48 hours before erupting into full-scale communal violence on Monday night.
The Midnight Skirmish
At approximately 8:30 PM on Monday, both parties descended upon the village streets armed with indigenous weapons and firearms. Witnesses described a harrowing scene as birdshot was discharged, striking numerous bystanders and participants.
Medical officials at the Narail District Hospital confirmed that they received a surge of casualties shortly after the incident. Dr. Alok Kumar Bagchi, the medical officer on duty, stated:
“Fourteen individuals from Nawagram were brought to the emergency department, all suffering from birdshot wounds. While the injuries were widespread, all patients are currently stable and out of immediate danger.”
