A meticulously planned and apparently clue-free murder in Manikganj has been unravelled within 24 hours, after detectives established that the victim, Nurjahan Begum, was killed by an acquaintance who entered her home through a bathroom ventilator to exact revenge over a long-running financial dispute and perceived public humiliation.
Nurjahan Begum, 55, a resident of the Pauli area in Manikganj Sadar upazila, was a well-known local grocery shop owner who ran her business from her own home. Neighbours described her as outspoken, resilient and hardworking, a woman who had struggled through life but maintained her independence.
According to police findings, the murder was carried out by Mosharraf Hossain, 45, who allegedly harboured deep resentment towards Nurjahan over unpaid dues, disagreements regarding entries in an accounts ledger, and remarks he believed had insulted him and his wife in public. These grievances, investigators say, gradually developed into a calculated plan for revenge.
On the night of 10 January, at around 8:30pm, Nurjahan spoke to her son-in-law over the phone before going to bed. By the following morning, her mobile phone was switched off. Concerned by the lack of contact, her daughter, Kajol Rekha, attempted to check on her mother and discovered that the house was locked from the outside. She waited throughout the day, but when lights were seen on inside the house around 9:30pm, suspicion deepened. Neighbours broke the lock, only to uncover a gruesome scene inside.
Police arrived shortly after, recovered the body and sent it to the Manikganj Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. A murder case was filed against unidentified suspects, with allegations that the killer had entered through the bathroom ventilator and used a sharp weapon.
Under the direct instructions of Superintendent of Police Mohammad Sarwar Alam, a special detective team was formed under the supervision of the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations). Using information technology analysis, call-detail records, movement tracking and intelligence from reliable sources, detectives arrested Mosharraf Hossain early on Tuesday, 13 January, from the South Shaljana area under Shibalaya Police Station.
During preliminary interrogation, Mosharraf reportedly confessed. He told investigators that on the night of the incident he took advantage of the quiet surroundings, entered the house through the ventilator opening, struck Nurjahan on the head with a wooden stool, attempted to suffocate her with a scarf and quilt, and finally wrapped an electric wire around her neck to ensure her death. Before fleeing, he removed her earrings and several other items, and later attempted to go into hiding.
Detective Branch officers have since recovered the weapons and materials used in the killing, bringing a swift end to what initially appeared to be a baffling and carefully concealed crime.
