Kushtia-3 constituency Member of Parliament and Jamaat leader Mufti Amir Hamza has been granted permanent bail in a defamation case filed over alleged derogatory remarks about Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.
On Sunday (14 June) at around 2:30 pm, Amir Hamza surrendered before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Sirajganj and submitted a bail application. Following the hearing, the presiding judge granted him permanent bail. The information was confirmed by Aminul Islam Mollik, a lawyer at the Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge’s Court.
According to the case statement, the lawsuit was filed on 2 April by Humayun Kabir Colonel, General Secretary of the Sirajganj District Lawyers’ Association. The complaint alleges that on 27 March, during a discussion prior to the Friday sermon at Hatsh Horipur Boro Mosque in Kushtia Sadar upazila, Mufti Amir Hamza referred to Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku as “atheist” and “anti-Islamic”.
The complainant further stated that a video of the remarks spread widely on social media and was also broadcast by various media outlets, leading to alleged damage to the minister’s social and political reputation. The case was filed under Sections 296, 500 and 504 of the Penal Code.
On the day the case was filed, the court took cognisance of the complaint and issued summons. However, as the accused did not appear before the court on the scheduled date, a warrant of arrest was issued against Mufti Amir Hamza on 21 April.
Following the warrant, he later surrendered before the court and applied for bail, which was granted after the hearing.
