At least ten people, including teachers, students and workers from various professions, have been killed in a series of separate road traffic accidents across Bogura district during the Eid-ul-Azha holiday period. Another six individuals were injured in these incidents, which occurred between 26 May night and 30 May at around 9pm across Shibganj, Sherpur, Nandigram and Kahalu upazilas.
According to police and fire service officials, the majority of the crashes involved motorcycles travelling at high speed, often resulting in loss of control. Head-on collisions and impacts involving heavy vehicles were also reported in several of the fatal incidents.
The most recent fatality occurred at around 9pm on 30 May in the Laladah area of Shibganj upazila. Ashraf Ali Pramanik (56), head teacher of Kuraahar Government Primary School, was returning home on a motorcycle when it was struck by a vehicle carrying potatoes. He died on the spot. Police later seized the vehicle, although the driver managed to flee the scene.
Earlier, on 29 May in the evening, three young men were killed in a head-on collision between two motorcycles at Baromail in Birkedar Union on the Bogura–Naogaon highway in Kahalu upazila. The deceased were Rahim Bijoy (23), Apurba (18) and Prem Banshphor (20). Two other individuals were injured and remain under treatment at a local hospital.
On 28 May at around 9pm, another tragic accident occurred at the Shafoljani area of the Sherpur–Dhunut road in Sherpur upazila. Three motorcycles collided, killing two students on the spot. The victims were Abu Raihan (20), a first-year student of Bogura Polytechnic Institute, and Tamim Hossain (21), a college student. Four others were injured in the incident.
Between the night of 26 May and the morning of 27 May, separate accidents in Nandigram and Kahalu upazilas claimed four more lives. The deceased included bus supervisor Uttam Mandal (30), truck helper Md Hridoy (30), truck assistant Injamam (20), and factory worker Robiul Awal Jia (42).
Local residents reported that increased traffic pressure during the Eid holiday, combined with reckless motorcycle riding among young people, significantly contributed to the spate of accidents. Road safety experts further noted that untrained high-speed riding and poor adherence to traffic discipline continue to elevate the risk of fatal collisions.
