A head-on collision between two passenger buses on the Cox’s Bazar–Chattogram highway in Chakaria upazila has left one child dead and at least 50 others injured. The incident occurred at approximately 2:15 pm on Monday (8 June) at Medakachapia slope in Khutakhali Union.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the collision involved an AC bus named Evergreen, travelling towards Cox’s Bazar, and a minibus known as Chakaria Service. The two vehicles collided directly on the highway, resulting in severe damage to both.
Following the impact, the minibus was extensively crushed, with its upper structure displaced onto the roadway while the main body was forced onto the western roadside footpath. The Evergreen bus also sustained heavy frontal damage, coming to rest with its front section on the eastern side of the road and part of its body remaining on the carriageway.
The severity of the collision brought traffic on the busy highway to a complete standstill. Emergency response teams, including police from the highway unit, arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and began rescue operations as well as efforts to remove the damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow.
Injured passengers were transported to multiple medical facilities, including Malumghat and Chakaria hospitals. Police confirmed that among the injured are drivers, assistants, and several female passengers, with a number of individuals reported to be in critical condition. However, the identities of the deceased and injured have not yet been formally confirmed.
Malumghat Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub stated that one child died at the scene as a result of the collision, while dozens of others sustained injuries. He further confirmed that both buses were heavily damaged in the crash and that rescue and clearance operations were ongoing at the time of reporting. He added that further details would be provided following the completion of initial assessments.
Authorities have initiated the process of investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. Efforts are also underway to clear the wreckage and normalise traffic movement along the Cox’s Bazar–Chattogram highway.
